CHICAGO, IL — The Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Sarah Bury for Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD), citing her commitment to environmental protection, climate resilience, and accountable public governance.
The Sierra Club, one of the nation’s leading environmental organizations, recognized Bury’s focus on protecting water quality, addressing increased flooding driven by climate change, and ensuring that MWRD decisions center environmental justice and community impact.
“I’m honored to earn the endorsement of the Sierra Club,” said Sarah Bury, candidate for MWRD Commissioner. “At a time when climate change is increasing flooding risks and threatening our waterways, we need leaders who are willing to act boldly to protect our water, our neighborhoods, and our future. I look forward to working alongside environmental advocates and community members to build a more resilient and equitable Cook County.”
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District plays a critical role in safeguarding public health, managing stormwater, and protecting the region’s rivers and Lake Michigan. Bury has emphasized the need for long-term infrastructure planning, transparency, and community engagement - particularly in communities that have historically borne the brunt of flooding and pollution.
“Sarah Bury understands that clean water and climate resilience are essential to public health and economic stability,” said Caroline Wooten, Sierra Club Organizing Director. “Her demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship and community-driven decision-making makes her the clear choice for MWRD Commissioner.”
Bury is an environmental advocate, attorney, and community leader running to strengthen environmental protections, address home and street flooding, and bring good governance principles to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.
