CHICAGO, IL - Today, Sarah Bury's campaign to become a Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District announced that it has been endorsed by LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, the nation’s only national organization dedicated to electing openly LGBTQ+ people to public office.
The endorsement reflects Victory Fund’s confidence in Bury’s ability to win and to serve as a strong, values-driven leader on issues of environmental protection, public health, and good governance that affect millions of Cook County residents.
“Sarah Bury is a proven advocate for environmental justice, good governance, and inclusive public leadership,” said a spokesperson for LGBTQ+ Victory Fund. “As an openly queer candidate with deep expertise in environmental law and water policy, Sarah brings both lived experience and professional skill to a role that directly impacts the health, safety, and economic well-being of communities across Cook County. We are proud to support her candidacy.”
“I’m deeply honored to receive the endorsement of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund,” said Sarah Bury. “Representation matters - especially in positions that shape public health, environmental protection, and infrastructure for millions of people. I’m committed to bringing transparency, equity, and community partnership to the MWRD, and to ensuring that LGBTQ+ voices are included in decisions that affect our shared future.”
LGBTQ+ people remain significantly underrepresented in elected office nationwide, despite making up a meaningful share of the population. Victory Fund works to close that gap by identifying, supporting, and electing openly LGBTQ+ candidates at every level of government.
Bury is an environmental organizer, attorney, and lifelong Cook County resident running for MWRD Commissioner to strengthen environmental stewardship, expand green infrastructure, address home and street flooding, and advance transparent, community-centered governance at the District. She will appear on the March 17, 2026 Democratic Primary ballot as a candidate for a six-year term.
